Healthy After School Care - LiveWell Greenville: $7,000After school care providers face challenges in providing healthy snacks and opportunities for physical activity for their participating students. LiveWell Greenville is working with the five largest after school care providers in Greenville County to provide CATCH training (Coordinated Approach to Child Health - the same approach used by Greenville County Schools) and assistance with developing healthier policies, systems and environments. CHOOSY Rx - Children's Advocacy, Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center: $7,500Head Start programs participating in the Choosy Rx Program through the Children's Hospital will receive training and an instructional kit to educate and support the staffs to intentionally facilitate movement instruction, nutrition activities, and reinforce health messages during daily routines. Appealing Choosy music and songs, embedded with developmentally appropriate health messages about nutrition and physical activity, will be used in the Head Start classrooms and shared with the parents. But if their offices have only unhealthy vending options, no opportunities for physical activity, or promote high calorie meals, it can be difficult to make healthy choices. LiveWell Greenville will develop a toolkit to support small to medium-sized businesses in crafting healthy policies, systems and environments. YMCA Greenville is the fiscal agent. Read more... Pediatric Toolkit - LiveWell Greenville: $15,000 LiveWell Greenville met with pediatric health care providers to learn their biggest obstacles to preventing and treating obesity in the primary care setting. The LiveWell Greenville pediatric toolkit was developed in response to their requests. After piloting the toolkit in three practices with a grant from Eat Smart Move More SC, LiveWell Greenville will bring the toolkit to all interested pediatric health care providers with support from the Piedmont Health Foundation. Responsive Grants Bon Secours St. Francis Health System: $3,000The Odessa Street Community Garden is a grassroots initiative spearheaded by the senior residents of the Sterling Community. The garden is less than a year old and has seen support from within and outside the community and has become an example of grassroots organizing, community building, revitalization, and addressing issues of access to healthy foods. With key support from Bon Secours St. Francis Health System, the community garden also has partnerships with Greenville county Recreaiton District, Trees Greenville, Long Branch Baptist Church, and LiveWell Greenville. Funds from the Piedmont Health Care Foundation will support the garden with tools, seeds, mulch and rehabilitation of a shed. Learn more about St. Francis's Healthy Communities work... Cancer Society of Greenville County: $3,000Since 1965, the Cancer Society of Greenville County has been a valuable partner and support to people with cancer, their families, and health care professionals. However, its 25 year old phone system was hindering its ability to meet its clients' needs. This grant from the Piedmont Health Care Foundation allows the Cancer Society to purchase a modern phone system to better conduct its important work. Visit the Cancer Society of Greenville County... Pendleton Place Children's ShelterFunding will support the on-site medical program which provides complete pediatric services for all Pendleton Place residents (approximately 230 children annually). These services include comprehensive medical exams for every child within 72 hours of arriving at the shelter. Many children who come to the shelter arrive with injuries, illness, or have been sexually abused. Learn more about the Pendleton Place Children's Shelter. Communities in Schools: $5,500Communities in Schools supports students, parents and teachers in select Title 1 Greenville County Schools with connections to critical community resources. Specifically, its health initiatives program ensures that children have a primary care home, receive referrals to health services, receive benefits such as Medicaid and SNAP, and have a healthy school environment. Greenville Forward: $7,500Gardening for Good is a Greenville County network of community gardens and urban farms that improves the health of residents, assists with neighborhood development efforts, and transforms Greenville through gardening. Spearheaded by Greenville Forward in collaboration with LiveWell Greenville, Furman University, Bon Secours St. Francis Health System, and the Center for Community Services/The Synergy Garden, Gardening for Good will use the funds for staff to develop and manage programs, web-based resources, and the collaboration. Visit Greenville Forward... Greenville Free Medical Clinic: $15,000The Greenville Free Medical Clinic provides care free of charge to uninsured people in our community. In early 2011, a major supplier of pharmaceuticals, the South Carolina-based nonprofit Welvista, discontinued its support. The Greenville Free Medical Clinic will use grant support from Piedmont Health Care Foundation for staff to process patients' assistance applications to pharmaceutical companies and for wholesale generic medication purchases. Taylors Free Medical Clinic: $10,000The primary mission of the Taylors Free Medical Clinic is to understand and serve the body, mind, and spiritual needs of the medically excluded and their households who live or work in the greater Taylors area. TFMC is dedicated to providing quality free health care to eligible individuals in an environment that exemplifies a culture of caring. TFMC exists to fill the ever-increasing community need for free medical services, including pharmaceuticals and specialty clinics. PHCF funds will support the clinic's operations, particularly its pharmacy. Visit its website.. Triune Mercy Center: $1,400 The Triune Mercy Center has a parish nurse who coordinates health care services for the homeless; sets up clinics; educations about preventive care; and offers homeless people respect and dignity. Triune Mercy Center will use Piedmont Health Care Foundation funding for store and pharmacy vouchers, bus passes, and other supplies for use by the parish nurse. Read about the Triune Mercy Center... United Ministries: $3,000The MED project is a last measure for those with no other resources in helpign with life-sustaining prescriptions. Medications for diabetes, asthma, seizures, heart problems as well as antibiotics for young children are made available to people with no orther resources for a brief period of time until care is established at the free medical clinics, New Horizon Family Health Services, or elsewhere.
